★★★★★

“It’s Wade’s steely performance as Tillery, a man torn between what’s expected and what’s right, that gives ‘Out of Liberty’ its backbone.” Sean P. Means · Salt Lake Tribune

“A well written, moving character piece that is both a study of faith and a Western jailbreak survival story.” Rachel Wagner · Film Critic

“Non-preachy, solidly scripted, and thrillingly tense, this historical western surrounding people on all sides of a religious tumult should be a nail-biting experience for all.” Spencer P. · Verified review

“I was surprised how good this movie was! A great view into a turbulent time in the history of Joseph Smith and the Mormon Church. Highly suggested.” Verified review

“I thought I knew this historical story, but learned so much. It made me think for a few days and value others opinions. The acting was amazing. It made the event very real.” Suzie Q · Verified review

“Masterpiece in every way: the story-telling, acting, and cinematography were phenomenal. For all religious and political beliefs. Love this film!” Talitha H · Verified review

“The story is told from the perspective of the non-member jailer, and is quite accurate. It is not a pro-church movie so much as a telling of the facts from a historical perspective.” Lane Roberts · Verified review

“This was an excellent portrayal of an event that happen early in the history of the Mormon church. It was both informative and entertaining.” DDH · Verified review

Where the story came from.

Behind the scenes

In the winter of 1838, Joseph Smith, his brother Hyrum, and four companions were committed without trial to the small stone jail at Liberty, Missouri, charged with treason in the aftermath of the Missouri Mormon War. For more than four months they lived in a dungeon fourteen feet square, beneath a ceiling too low for a grown man to stand upright, sleeping on straw through the Missouri winter while their families and their people were driven from the state. Joseph called it a hell surrounded with demons. Emma Smith visited three times. Hyrum met his infant son for the first time through its bars.

And yet it was inside those walls that Joseph Smith dictated some of the most beloved words in Latter-day Saint scripture, the anguished prayer that begins “O God, where art thou” and the answer that followed: that adversity would be “but a small moment.” Generations have come to call Liberty Jail the prison temple. The film tells this story through the eyes of Samuel Tillery, the young deputy jailer caught between the law he served and the mob at his door, charged with keeping six men alive whom half the county wanted dead. In April 1839, during a transfer to another county, the prisoners were quietly allowed to escape and crossed into Illinois.
